CarbonKit provides several categories for calculating and monitoring greenhouse gas emissions associated with primary production of Aluminium and related processes.
These methodologies and their associated data are sourced from the WRI Greenhouse Gas protocol worksheets and ultimately follow the IPCC 2006 Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and the Aluminum Sector Greenhouse Gas Protocol published by the International Aluminium Institute.
The most significant process emissions covered by these methodologies relate to:
- CO2 emissions from the consumption of carbon anodes in the reaction to convert aluminium oxide to aluminium metal;
- Perfluorocarbons (PFC) emissions (specifically CF4 and C2F6) during anode effects.
CO2 emissions
The following categories provide functionality and data for calculating CO2 emissions from aluminium manufacture:
- Default: this category provides data and a calculation methodology for CO2 emissions for anode/paste consumption using default emissions factors. This methodology can be used where no process data is available on use rates of carbon containing materials, and represents the IPCC Tier 1 approach.
- Prebake (electrolysis) - this category provides data and two calculation methodologies for CO2 emissions from prebake cells (Centre-Worked Prebake (CWPB), Side-Worked Prebake (SWPB)). This category represents Tiers 2 and 3 approach under the IPCC guidelines.
- Prebake (pitch cooking) - this category provides data and two calculation methodologies for CO2 emissions relating to pitch volatiles combustion and bake furnace paking material. This category represents Tiers 2 and 3 under the IPCC guidelines.
- Søderberg - this category provides data and calculation methodologies for CO2 emissions related to Søderberg electrolysis processes, and represent Tier 2 and 3 approaches for paste consumption under IPCC guidelines.
- Alternative method - an 'alternative method' for calculating electrolysis process related CO2 emissions is available. This methodology is based on the carbon content of materials consumed, and is sourced ultimately from International Aluminium Institute guidelines.
PFC emissions
Methodologies relating to perfluorocarbon (PFC) emissions from electrolysis are available at the following categories:
- Default PFC methodology - this category provides a calculation methodology for CF4 and C2F6 emissions using default emissions factors. This category represents the Tier 1 approach under the IPCC guidelines.
- Overvoltage PFC methodology - this category provides a calculation methodology for CF4 and C2F6 emissions based on data describing aluminium production and anode effect minutes per cell day. This methodology represents Tier 2 and 3 approaches for PFC emissions under IPCC guidelines.
- Slope PFC methodology - this category provides a calculation methodology for CF4 and C2F6 emissions based on anode effect overvoltage data. This methodology represents Tier 2 and 3 approaches for PFC emissions under IPCC guidelines.
Related process emissions
Related process emissions are also available in the following categories:
- Coke - this category provides a methodology for calculating the emissions associated with coke calcination. The methodology is sourced from The Aluminium Sector Greenhouse Gas Protocol published by the International Aluminium Institute in conjunction with the WRI Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
- Soda ash - this category provides a calculation methodology for CO2 emissions related to the use of soda ash in aluminium production. This methodology is sourced originally from International Aluminium Institute guidelines.
- Lime - this category provides data and calculation methodologies for CO2 emissions related to the production of lime, and represent Tier 2 and 3 approaches recommended under IPCC guidelines.
